The long boat Vs short boat technique arguement.... not really an arguement in my mind, for example the star tests do call for an efficient forward paddling technique - with the recent development of short boats the techniques for producing an efficient forward paddle stroke is different - not right or wrong, just different - from that needed from a longer boat. I think it is up to the coach to be able to demonstrate an efficient forward paddle stroke in a variety of crafts, and more importantly to understand why, for example, sitting in an upright posture in a longer boat is more efficient for the forward paddle stroke whereas slightly leaning back in a shorter boat produces a more efficient forward stroke? :evil Myself I use a Perception Method Air, very similar to an Inazone 242. I have a very low volume playboat (Amp) which has seen plenty of river action (inc. grade 5), but as I get older and wiser the notion of extracting my feet from a numb position tightly wedged between the decks whilst pinned under a siphon...becomes oddly less appealing. Comfort and safety are becoming more important to me (too late for my deformed feet).
